New Illustration

I've been saving this one for a while- but it seems that the time has come to post it...lest anyone think that I am leaving my illustrating in the dust.  I've been experimenting with some new stuff- textures and print-making- even some new faces...I've been looking at lots of new illustrators, thinking about where I want my artwork to go...Here's Goldilocks.

Here is my latest creation for The Illustrator Group Soup gals.  I had the hardest time picking a background color for this.  I played around in Photoshop and looked at every color of the rainbow.  Its still open for suggestion if anyone has any other ideas.  I'm not sure why I chose to put Ms. Pippi in a Starry Night landscape- something about her character makes me think of Van Gogh- part chaotic, part intense, part swirly. 

This one's entitled "Ear Puffs" and is an interpretation of our visit Downtown to see the trees all lit up.  It was a fabulous winter evening until I was forced to walk several blocks in the cold with one mucus-filled baby in one arm, and one thrashing, screaming, sobbing, kicking 4-year-old in the other.  Although extremely memorable for the mommy, apparently the "ear puffs" were more memorable to the 4-year-old.

Hansel and Gretel

Happy Halloween everyone- here's my third piece done for these way cool ladies.  I had a completely different design in mind until last Friday.  I was researching for a project I'm doing with my class on The Arts and Crafts Movement...and I came across a design for a playbill that gave me instant inspiration (not bad for a Friday!)  Anyway, here's my second version.  When I pull myself together enough to find my missing keys, I'll post the other version...its oh so facination how this weird little mind works..

Rapunzel

My second assignment for my Illustration Group Soup group follows.  I kind of stretched the Rapunzel idea a tad bit.  My inspiration is a girl that I have in one of my Art One classes, Angel.  She has this amazing black hair...its almost purple, its so black.  She's Hispanic...I think South American- she speaks almost no English...and I wanted to make a Rapunzel for her.  Well, not for her exactly...that would be a bit creepy...but for girls like her.  I have been reading some fairy tales from other places lately.  Russia (see Patricia Polacco- her illustrations are perfect), Mexico...and I wanted to incoporate a sort of mysterious, internal, contemplative, quiet feel to the whole thing.

Hello, my dear new secret friends, Prismacolor markers!  You are 72 of the most lucious, most vibrant, most precious of art supplies.  You were brought in the house hidden from sight in a non-descript box to insure your survival.  I take you out at night, when all is quiet, in hopes of exploring your wonderfulness...alone...far away from little sweaty hands.  Now I must find out how to unlock your secrets...before I fall asleep at my art table.
